Abstraction never held much draw for me, I’m far more interested in how things are put together, how they exist in space, & how the light hits them. Some time ago I was working on 2 large Nio figures, trying to capture their fierce energy and highlight their power by setting them against swirling, atmospheric backgrounds. Whatever I tried, I could not get the paint to activate as I envisioned. Frustrated, I decided to eliminate all recognizable content and see what would happen. From this shift came this series of abstracts. I had fun playing around with the paint and mixed media, although for me the images evoked specific imagery despite my trying to leave it behind. The body paintings here bring in some of the approaches I used in the abstract work, and share an experimental approach and technique.
