Paintings of landscapes, trees, and flowers, painted outdoors and in my studio. Painting outside is thrilling, requiring working as fast as possible to put down what I see as the light changes and the wind blows, resulting in a feeling of immediacy hard to replicate with paintings made inside, where time & the elements aren’t in play. It’s unpredictable: I’ve had the wind carry my easel away, trees drop painful acorns on me, bugs descend, and once even a snake drop from the mouth of a hawk in flight and land writhing on a canvas I had laid flat on the ground to paint. It’s also great to engage with curious passers by. When I’m working in the studio, the challenge is different. I have to stay active, moving to different areas of the painting and always avoiding getting too comfortable and risking overworking the image. One way I counter this is by having several different paintings in process at the same time, never staying with any one for too long.
